One of the artists represented in the MoMA collection, Murakami is known worldwide for blurring the boundaries between fine art and pop culture. His work is heavily influenced by Japanese comic books, graphic novels, and animation. In 1994, Murakami received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to participate in MoMA PS1's International Studio Program. Murakami's work has been featured in several exhibitions at MoMA, including Comic Abstraction: Image-Breaking, Image-Making in 2007.
